«Periodontosis» is a name applied to a large group of periodontal diseases, the main being gingivitis, periodontitis and periodontosis proper. The cause of periodontosis stems from a reduction in the blood supply to the gum tissues, which in serious and neglected cases leads to tissue atrophy and, subsequently, to a loss of teeth. Unfortunately, there is no way to reverse existing periodontosis, though modern technologies do allow partial reconstruction of the gums and can halt the progression of the desease if caught in time.

Gingivitis, or gum inflammation, is caused by bacteria, found in plaque, a result of poor oral hygiene. Anti-inflammatory therapy combined with professional cleaning of teeth and oral hygiene education is used to treat this condition. The most common cause of tooth loss is gingivitis.

Periodontitis - the most frequent periodontal disease is characterized by the degradation of gum tissue surrounding and supporting the tooth eventually leading to tooth loss if left untreated. The causes of periodontitis are poor oral hygiene, genetic disposition, subgingival calculus and tooth alignment issues. Treatment of periodontitis consists of the elimination of the cause of inflammation, removing calculus, often by surgical means.
