Saint Petersburg, which served as the capital of the Russian Empire for over three hundred years, has since been the undisputable cultural and educational centre of Russia.

Saint Petersburg, one of the most fascinating cities in the world, was founded by Peter the Great on the delta of the Neva River at the east end of the Gulf of Finland. Its unique history is imprinted in its avenues, palaces and parks which date back to the XVIII – XIX centuries. On the streets of the city, visitors will admire an amazing combination of architecture from different epoques and styles.

Our city has often been referred to as “the symphony in stone.” Its numerous islands, rivers and canals add to its peculiar charm. Hundreds of visitors come to the Neva embankment in June-July to witness a unique sight: during the period of “white nights” the bridges across the Neva and its tributaries are drawn to let large sea vessels pass through. The most beautiful ensembles of palaces and parks in the suburbs, Pushkin, Pavlovsk, Gatchina, Petrodvorets, Lomonosov, the historical part of Kronshtadt, have all been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
